BMW and Toyota will jointly design a new sports cars in the near future. New details on the 2018 Toyota Supra, based on the FT-1 concept, emerged online. We know that it will be similar to the upcoming BMW Z4. The new Toyota Supra is expected to arrive sometime in 2017. Let’s see what the latest rumors claim.
FT-1-based BMW-Toyota Supra Design
The 2018 Toyota Supra will share its platform with the next-generation BMW Z4 model. BMW will be in charge for the design and production of both sports models, which will supposedly appear within three years. Of course, the new Supra will borrow some of Toyota‘s own design elements and will be mostly based on the 2014 Toyota FT-1 Graphite Concept model (photo below).
Below, you can see a rendering photo of the BMW-designed Toyota Supra. You will notice that it does share many styling features with the FT-1, which made a debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. However, it will not have a Formula 1-inspired front end. The large air intakes remain, though. BMW will be using a hybrid steel, aluminium and carbon-reinforced plastic materials during the construction of the next-generation Supra and Z4 models, in order to make them lighter and to increase speed, performance and handling, and to improve fuel economy.
Engine, Specs, Performance
Rumors claim that the new rear-wheel drive BMW Z4 roadster will be powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder TDI engine. While the 2018 Toyota Supra will use the same BMW-supplied power unit and dual-clutch transmission, the car is also going to use Toyota’s plug-in hybrid technology, adding three electric motors (twin motors at the front and one at the rear) to unlock AWD traction, producing about 350 horsepower. The similar system can be found under the hood of the Yaris Hybrid R Concept.
