The current Jeep Wrangler is one of the best off-road vehicles on the market offering one of the best chassis, as well as a really mature look. However, despite being on the market only for around 8 years, the base of the car has been around for a lot longer than that. Many people thought that this was going to be the last model, but at the end of 2014 Jeep and Chrysler released a schedule which shows a next-generation Wrangler inbound for the fall of 2017, which is likely going to be released on the market as the 2018 Jeep Wrangler, an all-new terrain vehicle which Jeep hopes it will become the best selling model in its class.
Exterior and Interior Design, Weight Loss
Unfortunately though, at this point in time there are very few details about the 2018 Jeep Wrangler, but the manufacturer did say something about it. It seems that this is luckily going to remain a body on frame model, so all that off-road capability should remain unchanged. This is a really good thing for both customers as well as for the automaker, because it puts them a step above most of its competitors. Besides that, there are only some rumors which suggest a more modern design, as well as completely different engines, but more on that a bit later.
The outside of the next-generation 2018 Jeep Wrangler is likely going to be more modern, but the actual design touches characterized for this model are going to be kept. It will still be boxy in appearance, but things such as new active grilles or LED headlights are going to be introduced in order to increase efficiency. There are also a few rumors which suggest that this might be the first Jeep to get an all-aluminum body which would reduce vehicle’s weight, but it would make the repair costs a bit too much. It will also get an independent suspension. Below you can see a rendering photo of the upcoming vehicle.
Inside, on the other hand, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is likely going to be the most advanced Jeep yet when it comes to the base equipment. The dashboard will make use of an LCD screen instead of the usual instrument cluster. It will very likely be equipped from the factory with a GPS system with a special trail program that is going to make driving the Wrangler in off-road safer than usual. We also expect improved comfort.
Engine Rumors, Specs, Better Fuel Economy
Engine wise it seems that the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is likely going to see the demise of the current 3.6L V-6 in the favor of two new engines. The base is likely going to be a twin-turbocharged 3-liter V-6 diesel with more than 200 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque which should offer all the off-road capabilities it needs. A 6-speed manual is likely going to be the base transmission, but we also learned that an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox will also be offered, the one that can be found in the Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500. This will have a huge impact on fuel economy, making it better by 9 percent.
The optional engine is quite possibly going to be a newly developed powertrain specifically for it. Early rumors suggested a V-8, but this just would not make sense in terms of fuel consumption or power. The more sensible engine to arrive on the new Wrangler though would be a 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 with either a supercharger or turbocharger, which could provide up to 330 horsepower and more than 340 lb-ft of torque, all while using at least 20% less fuel than the current V-6. On top of that, it would offer most of its torque from as low as 1750 rpm which is great for off-road use. Another speculation suggests that there could be a diesel option as well.
2018 Jeep Wrangler Release Date, Price
As already mentioned, the new model is expected to make its debut during 2017 and go on sale during the same year as a 2018 model. These are just speculations, but the price of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is likely going to remain pretty similar to the current generation, so expect a base model to cost around $26,000 while the top of the range trim levels or the special edition models are likely going to fetch as much as $40,000 or more.
