The Bentley Continental GT is a luxury sports car which has been available since 2003 and even though in 2011 it received an update, the car remained quite similar to the older model and only a trained eye could actually see the difference. Well, rumors started to appear a few months ago about the upcoming 2018 Bentley Continental GT, which would change the car all together and after Bentley launched the 2015 EXP10 Speed 6 Concept, it became clear that a next generation GT is in the works. While at this point there aren’t that many details about the upcoming model, both Bentley and their parent company, Volkswagen, hinted about this upcoming car.
2018 Bentley Continental GT Changes
Firstly it seems that they are not going to get rid of the not so fuel efficient V-8 engines too soon, especially considering how much work they put into them. On top of that, it seems that this 2018 Bentley Continental GT is likely going to be based on a brand new platform, not the 30 years old D1 which has been in one form or another used as far back as the Audi V8. This new platform is going to be made mostly out of aluminum and carbon fiber and it should finally allow Bentley to drop the weight of the car under 2000 kilograms, which would be a hefty 350 kilograms save. This would allow the car to be more comfortable, faster as well as more fuel efficient.
The interior of the 2018 Bentley Continental GT will also go through some major changes and once again, the 2015 Bentley EXP10 Speed 6 Concept shows us how this could be. The automaker will likely get rid of the massive center console in the favor of a slimmer aluminum-made one, which is going to feature a 14-inch screen that will act as the center console for the car. On top of that, the instrument panel will remain with mechanical dials which are going to be hand-made at a Swiss watch company. The best part about this interior, though, is the fact that it will not have any type of plastic but rather only leather, aluminum and carbon fiber or wood on some special edition models.
The exterior of the 2018 Bentley Continental GT won’t be as different as we would like than the one of the current generation but it will rather be an evolution following the design of the EXP10 Concept. The headlights are now going to be full LED, the grille is going to be slightly bigger, and the shape of the exterior is going to be slightly sportier, in order to make it a viable option against cars such as the new Aston Martin. Bentley also suggested some time ago that a lightweight version of it is possible, version which could compete with the Porsche 911 GT3.
Engine, Specs, 0-60 MPH Time
Engine wise the changes are not going to be as drastic as we would hope. The 2018 Bentley Continental GT is likely going to be available with a single offering for starters, a 4-liter twin-turbocharged V- with up to 650 horsepower and more than 600 lb-ft of torque. It would allow this beast to get to 60 MPH from a standing start in under 3 seconds and go up to a maximum top speed of well over 200 MPH. The engine will use a similar 8-speed gearbox, as well as a four-wheel drive system, similar to those found in the current model. A hybrid is also a very possible option, but the actual details are currently unknown. Most people expect it to get a 3-liter twin-turbo V-6 coupled to a pair of electric motors, a similar system to that found in the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid.
Continental GT 2018 Release Date
The all-new Continental GT is expected to be released during 2017 for the upcoming model year. Pricing is not known in this moment, but expected price is between $190,000 and $200,000.
