It appears that Tesla Motors have a plan to release a third-generation electric sedan sometime in 2016. This model will be called the 2017 Tesla Model E.

Some sources claim that one of the possible names of this new sedan might be Tesla BlueStar. However, the manufacturer has already registered a new trademark — Model E. My guess is that it will be called the 2017 Tesla Model E, although the trademark is still pending. BlueStar is probably its codename.

One source suggests that the American automaker wants to design and produce electric vehicle that will be available to the masses at an affordable price.

According to Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s chief designer, the company wants to create a car that will offer affordability, increased range, and improved performance with a starting price under $40 thousand dollars.

Design of 2017 Tesla Model E

It is still early to have any specific information regarding the design of the 2017 Tesla Model E. I assume that this model will follow the distinctive style of other Tesla cars. Expected is the familiar front end with wide oval grille, similar to that of 2012 Model S (photo below). It could be smaller in size, though.

2012 Tesla Model S

I also expect to see interior styling similar to the Model S, with that big touchscreen display positioned next to the steering wheel. Designers should use premium and high-quality materials for seats and other interior elements. But there is also the possibility that this model will have less equipment to lower the car’s price.

Engine and Performance

The new 2017 Tesla Model E could be powered by an electric motor and the same Lithium-Ion battery pack as the Model S. The car will have a rear-wheel drive and its batteries will be positioned in the floor, possibly below the driver’s seat. Expected range will be about 200 miles (that is almost 322 kilometers).

Release Date and Price

If rumors are true, the 2017 Tesla Model E will be officially unveiled at the 2015 Auto Show in Detroit.

According to the manufacturer’s CEO, Elon Musk, this new model will hopefully go on sale in 2016 for 2017 model year. However, it is also possible that it might be released in early 2017.

The expected price of this electric sedan will be somewhere between $30,000 and $40,000.

More details about the new 2017 Tesla Model E will hopefully appear in the upcoming months. I will let you guys know when I learn something new. Until then, feel free to give your opinion and write it in the comment section below.
