A report suggests that the new Land Rover Defender SUV might go on sale during 2016 for the 2017 model year, and it will be the most capable model ever. Here are the latest details and rumors.
2017 Land Rover Defender Design
According to some sources, the final design of the 2017 Land Rover Defender had been signed off. The production model might resemble the car posted in the rendering photos below. As you can probably notice, it will most likely be based on the Land Rover DC100 Concept introduced in 2011.
Of course, two years is a long time period and the vehicle’s design might change. The DC100 Concept was not well received among the fans, so it will not be surprising if the automaker decide to refresh its design and give it a brand-new look. The automaker is going to use its PLA aluminum monocoque chassis which will be much stiffer and stronger, making this model the most capable ever. It will be able to withstand any conditions. As for the wheels and tires, it is said that the new Defender will be riding on the same wheel sizes as Toyota Hilux or Land Cruiser models. The interior will receive a premium treatment, so expect more luxury and modern tech features.
Possible Engine Options
These are just rumors, but the 2017 Land Rover Defender might come with a choice of the both diesel and gasoline engines, including the turbocharged inline-4 units, as well as the Jaguar-sourced V-6 powerplants. As for the transmission options, standard models will come with either an 8-speed or 9-speed automatic transmissions. Optional choice might include a manual gearbox, but this was not confirmed.
Like I already said, the next-generation 2017 Land Rover Defender is set to arrive in 2016, and it will probably be introduced for the 2017 model year. It might be unveiled during next year as a concept model at one of the international auto shows, most likely in Geneva, Frankfurt or New York. The question is whether this SUV will be available in North America.
There is also a rumor that in the following year a pickup truck variant might be introduced to the public. I don’t know if this is true, but we will know more details in the near future.
