2016 Scion iA Sedan Review

The 2016 Scion iA is the first four door car sold under the Scion badge. If this car looks familiar to you, you are right, it is actually the revised Mazda 2 sedan. The Japanese automaker wants to bring this model to the young drivers in the United States. Models sold by Scion are known for having only one trim level and they are super simple to buy. Now, lets see what this car has to offer.

Mazda2-inspired Exterior and Interior Design

Scion is known for selling European Toyota models on the market of North America, but the 2016 Scion iA is their first Mazda. However, new Toyota Yaris is also based on Mazda2 sedan and the two cars are going to be built together in one of the Mazda factories. Basically, the Mazda2 is going to be sold as Mazda, as Toyota and as Scion. On the outside, there have been no significant changes. The new model can be hard to differentiate than the original, but the company did some small changes – first thing that they have changed is the branding – the car has Scion badges, front bumper is slightly changed, front grille has been redesigned, headlights are completely new and taillights have different position of the inside elements. That is it. These are the only changes on the outside of the upcoming model.

The situation is similar with the interior. The 2016 Scion iA will have the same interior that Mazda2 has. However, we think that this is really a good thing, especially when you take a look at the nice and clean design of the interior of the Mazda2. The iA will offer the same colors of the interior and similar features, but the interesting thing with every Scion is that it is going to be packed with features. Actually, the specifications given by the company stated that the base Scion model is going to have more features and equipment than the base models of both Mazda and Toyota, which is the part of its appeal. Some of these features are: backup camera, cruise control, push button ignition, keyless entry and the most interesting features of all – the infotainment system with knob interface and 7-inch touchscreen display.

2016 Scion iA Engine, Specs, MPG

The 2016 Scion iA is going to be offered with only one engine, which is the part of their sales tactics – to be as easy as possible for the buyer to choose. The engine in question is 1.5L SkyActiv engine with four cylinders, but it will not have SkyActiv branding under the hood (photo below). This engine produces 106 horsepower and 103 lb-ft of torque. The customers will be able to choose between a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. Expected fuel economy is 33/42/37 mpg city/highway/combined.

When it comes to the release date, we expect that the new 2016 Scion iA is going to go on sale in the United States in next couple of months, together with the iM hatchback. The automaker did not announce the official pricing details, but some sources claim that the sedan’s price is most likely going to be around $16,000.
