Ever since it was released the Cayman was watered down by Porsche in order to keep their 911 safe. Not many people were okay with it mainly because this model could have been one of the best sports car ever made! Well, lucky for all these people is that the automaker has finally decided to unleash the true 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4, an improved version of the original which is going to offer more power, better chassis and performance level that will be very similar to the entry level model of the 911. This should mean that it will easily become the best selling Cayman so far.

Or will it? Well, Porsche did gave it all those nice things but they also bumped the price to 84,600 dollars for the GT4, meaning it is almost as expensive as the 911 and almost 25,000 more than the regular car. However, at this price point it will handle better than pretty much anything else. The release date hasn’t been confirmed so far but it might come as early as the end of 2015.

Chassis, Engine, Specs, Performance

Unlike any other Cayman, the 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4 will borrow heavily from the 911 including parts from the suspension system. In fact the automaker confirmed that more than 90% of the suspension system has been borrowed from the 911 GT3, meaning that it should drive just as good if not better, considering it will feature a mid-mounted engine. The brakes as well as the active transmission mounts are going to be very similar to what you would find in a GT3.

However, they didn’t just work on the chassis in order to drive better, but they also gave the 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4 a new engine in order to stay competitive and drive as fast as it looks. This is a new 3.8L flat-6 derived directly from the 911. However, in the Cayman this engine will make 385 horsepower, which is 15 hp less than what it makes in the 911. This was needed in order to keep it less powerful than its bigger brother. However, it isn’t really a problem considering the Cayman is lighter and feature, in our opinion, a better gearbox. The 6-speed manual is precise and offers a great feedback. The only drawback is that the PDK is even better but Porsche won’t offer it because they want to keep the driving experience as pure as they can. As far as the performance goes, we expect a 0 to 60 MPH time of less than 4 seconds, meaning that it will finally be faster than the base 911. The top speed on the other hand is likely to stick at 183 miles per hour.

Exterior and Interior Design

The exterior of the 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4 wasn’t left untouched. In fact Porsche did extensive work on it in order to improve the aerodynamics of the car and to make it look more aggressive. The front bumper will now get a splitter while at the back a diffuser is going to be present. The old pop-up spoiler has been changed to a fixed wing very similar to the older GT3. This will provide 50% to 70% more downforce at speeds of over 120 miles per hour. The wheels are going to be light alloys designed specifically for it and just like with the GT3, these are going to feature a Formula 1 like quick-release mechanism.

On the inside though things are going to be kept pretty standard. In fact, besides the sport seats which offer the possibility of a racing harness or the new steering wheel, which offers a better grip, thanks to the materials used, the interior will remain the same as in the normal Cayman. The 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4 will come with a choice of both the Alcantara and leather upholstery for the seats, which also can be replaced with the custom bucket seats made of carbon fiber. Infotainment screen, both digital and analog gauges, and analog clock in the center of the dashboard are just some of the features worth mentioning.
