Update Oct 29, 2014: The automaker has revealed several engine details. Keep reading…
2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata Design
As it was assumed, the design of the new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata was inspired by the Mazda Shinari Concept model (you can see it in the image gallery). It follow the KODO design language, as many Mazda models.
The roadster is now lighter than the previous-generation model, making it the most compact model in its lineup so far. It is also a little bit lower, and will be available with the choice of 16-inch and 17-inch alloy wheels.
Its hood is more curved and quite low, while the front end looks more serious, with pulled back front fenders, big grille, large air intakes, and full LED headlights. The rear end is also curved, and slightly increased compared to the front end. It comes with revised taillights, almost flat trunk, and double exhaust tips under the rear bumper.
Inside, there are two sports seats, while all the commands are easily accessible. The cabin is driver-oriented. We can expect all the modern technologies implemented in the upcoming model, modern infotainment system, audio system, etc.
Engine – SkyActiv Technology
It was revealed that the new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata will be powered by a new SkyActiv-G petrol engine with direct injection, that will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission. And that’s all I can tell you, no figures were given.
Update: In the North American market, this coupe is going to receive a SkyActiv 2.0 petrol engine. In Europe, it will be driven by an improved 1.5L four-cylinder unit. Figures were not given, but don’t expect anything below 150 horsepower and at least 150 lb-ft of torque. I hope the official figures will be announced at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show this November.
New Mazda MX-5 Release Date
According to the Japanese manufacturer, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata will be released to the international market during 2015, most likely in the summer. It is too early to talk about its price, but don’t expect any price tag below $30,000.
