The 2016 Mazda 2, a.k.a. the new Mazda Demio, is the upcoming hatchback model that is set to arrive in 2014 in Japan, and during 2015 in other markets. Keep reading to learn more details about its new design and performance.
2016 Mazda 2 Exterior Redesign
The new hatchback has been revised both outside and inside, featuring the so called Kodo design language. Exterior of the 2016 Mazda 2 has been increased, making the car a little bit longer and taller than previous-generation model. This is good, because it means more head and leg space inside.
The new Mazda Demio borrowed many of its design features from the Hazumi Concept, which made its debut in Geneva. I will not describe in detail the external appearance of this model, because all the details I have mentioned when describing the Mazda Hazumi.
You just have to know that this subcompact vehicle comes with a larger front grille with chrome trims, and new LED headlights that stretch toward the front fenders, kinda looking like eyes of the Transformer. Viewed from the front, the car looks modern and aggressive. On the back, the horizontal taillights and stop lights are also revised.
New Mazda2 Interior and Equipment
The interior of the 2016 Mazda 2 also received a facelift. As you can see in the photo below (and those in the gallery) the center console has been slightly lowered. The dashboard is clean and very simple, while the instrument cluster has been reconfigured. Nice addition is a head-up display system, showing additional information while the driver’s attention remains focused on the road.
Protruding from the middle part there’s a color display with GPS navigation and MZD Connect infotainment system. The automaker also implemented a host of safety technologies.
The seats are wrapped in either leather with red stitching or cloth and plastic combination, depending on a trim level. Although the Mazda Demio is small, the cabin is spacious enough even for taller people. Higher trim levels also include premium leather-wrapped dashboard and door armrests.
2016 Mazda Demio Engine and Performance
This small hatchback will be powered by a highly-efficient diesel engine with capacity of 1.5 liters. This SkyActiv-D 4-cylinder engine produces 103 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque when mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, or 184 lb-ft when paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It will be the standard engine for the European market.
There is also a word that second engine choice for the 2016 Mazda 2 will include a 1.3-liter petrol unit delivering 91 horsepower and 89 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed auto gearbox.
2016 Mazda 2 Release Date and Price
As for release date, rumor has it that this model will go on sale in the United States during 2015. However, it will be released in Japan by the end of this year for the 2015 model year. Exact launch date in the U.S. will be announced later, as well as the price. We can expect a slightly increase in pricing compared to the current model, which price tag is about $14,720.
That’s about it. The new 2015 Vauxhall Corsa might be interesting to you as well.
