This is the new 2015 Subaru BRZ STI Performance Concept, unveiled last year in New York. If you’re a car fan then you must know that the STI division transforms regular Subaru cars into high-performance road-going racers. However, not all models receive the STI treatment and this is normal because it just wouldn’t be adequate. However, there are also some cars which do deserve the treatment, but they didn’t receive it, mostly because Subaru didn’t think there is enough profit to make on them. The BRZ is one of those cars, an extremely fun little 2-door sports car which does have all the elements of being great except power. It is very fun to drive, quite comfortable for long journeys, fuel efficient and cheap as well.
Well, lucky for us is that Subaru finally decided to make a few upgrades to the car made in cooperation with Toyota. Their model is going to receive quite a few upgrades which are meant to make it not only faster but also better to look at. The 2015 Subaru BRZ STI Performance Concept is the preview of what is waiting for us, a meaner, tougher and faster car all around. This is in fact a tuning package which will also be available for customers who already bought a BRZ. This will include a few chassis changes like front and rear struts that will make the car stiffer, a new suspension system as well as a lot of changes to its engine.
Engine, Performance, Specs
Engine wise, they worked on the naturally aspirated 2-liter flat-four engine, so they turbocharged it, gave it an intercooler, as well as the new intake and exhaust systems. The end result should be around 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque which is a nice improvement over the base model. This should solve all those complaints about the car being too slow, but it will take from its fuel efficiency.
The production car based on the 2015 Subaru BRZ STI Performance Concept will use the same rear-wheel drive and manual gearbox with six gears as before, but it will also receive a limited slip differential that will help it put all that power down. A four-wheel drive version of the car has also been rumored for quite some time, but at this point it is really unlikely for it to ever come on the market. The rear-wheel drive version should be enough, and thanks to the power increase, it should easily be able to reach 60 miles per hour in around 5 seconds and go up to a maximum top speed of around 140 mph.
2015 Subaru BRZ STI Performance Concept Design
The exterior of the 2015 Subaru BRZ STI Performance Concept has also been revised extensively in order to make it look like it has 300 horsepower. The front end received a stylish bumper with LED fog lights, bigger air intakes which feed the intercooler and the oil cooler, as well as a new set of headlights. At the back there is a new exhaust system, a massive spoiler which helps it at high speed cornering, as well as a diffuser with a pair of exhaust tips. The car’s body also received a wide body-kit needed for the wider 19-inch wheels, wrapped in high performance tires.
The interior on the other hand hasn’t been so extensively modified so the BRZ STI only received a pair of new sports bucket seats, which are both lighter and stronger than before, as well as a new steering wheel with flat bottom. On top of that, it is basically the same as the base model, as you can see from the photo below.
Subaru BRZ Release Date, Price
The 2015 Subaru BRZ STI Performance Concept model was presented to the public at the 2015 New York Auto Show. The price of the production model has yet to be revealed, but the tuning package is likely going to come on the market during this year for no more than $10,000, while the actual coupe with all the upgrades installed should cost around $35,000. That could be a very good price, depending on what Subaru brings to the table in the end.
