The 2015 McLaren 650S Spider is a convertible version of this supercar. Both the Spider and Coupe models made their debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.
The 2015 McLaren 650S Spider looks almost identical to the Coupe model. The front end is the same, with the beautiful boomerang-shaped LED headlights. These lights flow into the front air intakes and front splitter, and that part of the car kinda reminds me of the two snakes that look at each other.
Of course, what distinguishes this model is that it has a roof that can be lowered in its compartment within 17 seconds. Therefore, the part of the car behind the passengers has been slightly modified.
On the back, there are the same thin taillights, the rear spoiler and a pair of exhaust tips.
The cabriolet sits on the large 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires.
As with the coupe model, the cabin of the 2015 McLaren 650S Spider is wrapped in Alcantara leather and carbon fiber materials. It kinda feels like you’re inside a Formula 1 cockpit. The interior of both models is very similar, but there are, of course, two differences.
When the roof is up, a space in which the top is stored when it is lowered can be used as additional storage space for your stuff. Other difference includes two B-pillars behind the driver and passenger, which can sometimes block visibility behind the car and create blind spots. Luckily, there are prominent rearview mirrors that will help you not to miss any vehicle behind you.
There are only two sports seats that look very comfortable.
On the instrument cluster, there is just one RPM gauge in the middle, and two small TFT screens on each side of the gauge, that shows additional information.
As for the additional equipment, there is a touchscreen that owner can use to control satellite radio and audio streaming, activate GPS navigation, connect devices via Bluetooth, and activate other functions. The center console also features many buttons and switches, while some of the controls can be found on the door panels.
Engine and Performance
The 2015 McLaren 650S Spider is powered by the same engine as the Coupe model. That means that behind a driver is positioned a twin turbo 3.8-liter V8 engine that is able to produce 640 ponies and 500 lb-ft (678 Nm) of torque. The power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox.
The Convertible’s top speed is 204 mph (or 329 km/h if you prefer). It is slightly lower compared to the max speed of the Coupe’s model. It can reach the speed of 62, 124, 189 mph (100, 200, 300 km/h) in 3.0, 8.6, and 26.5 seconds, respectively.
It returns 24.2 mpg combined on the EU combined cycle, just like the Coupe, which means that it consumes 11.7 l/100 km. It emits 275 g/km of CO2.
2015 McLaren 650S Spider Price
If you decide to buy this model, you should set aside $280,225, which is about £168,455 at the current rates. Too much for my pocket, but I’m sure there will be some car lovers of sports cars that will enjoy this model. It will make its U.S debut at the 2014 New York Auto Show in April.
