The 2015 Kia Soul EV is a new electric vehicle that made its debut at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show. It is a nice-looking vehicle with solid specs and zero emissions. One interesting thing is that it is now available for sale in the United States. Let’s see what the electric Kia Soul has to offer in terms of a design and performance.
Engine, Specs, Performance, MPGe
As a suffix in its name suggests, the 2015 Kia Soul EV is an electric vehicle that is powered by a battery and an electric motor. It houses a 27-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery that will allow 80-100 miles of normal driving. This unit is cooled by air and it is positioned just under the floor. Another thing that runs this city car is an electric motor that brings 109 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels. This unit is cooled by liquid and it allows this nice little vehicle to achieve maximum speed of 90 mph. Soul is not a car designed for racing, and you should not expect a remarkable performance. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 12 seconds. When it comes to the economy, it is rated at 120 MPGe in the city and 92 MPG3 on the highway.
To charge a battery, there are two ports in the car’s nose (scroll down to a gallery below to see a photo showing this). These ports are a standard Level 2 J-1772 port and CHAdeMO port intended for quick charging. If you use a standard port, the time required to charge is about 5 hours. Using CHAdeMO in just half an hour you will be able to charge 80% of a battery.
Design of 2015 Kia Soul EV
This all-electric model sure looks like a regular model, it keeps its square shape, but there are, of course, several new features. The 2015 Kia Soul EV, for example, has a small cover at the front instead of a grille, behind which are charging port, as we have mentioned above. It retains its iconic broad stance of the standard model. Some of the features worth mentioning are projector headlamps, LED taillamps and positioning lights. It rides on 16-inch alloy wheels wrapped in rubber tires that reduce rolling resistance (SLRR tires). This will help increasing the total range. Kia offers this small EV in three different color combinations: light blue color with white roof, pearl white with blue roof, and silver body with white roof.
Interior Styling, Equipment
As we already mentioned, the battery is located in the floor of the car, so the new 2015 Kia Soul EV has more interior space than a regular model. Unfortunately, the cargo space had to be slightly reduced. The interior is colored in darker and lighter shades of gray, with blue stitching on the eco-friendly seats and steering wheel, to match the exterior color. Buyers can also choose leather materials if they like. Mentioning the steering wheel, several control buttons are located on it, and there are also controls on the center console. There is also an OLED display, that does not consume a lot of energy, which is perfect for the electric car. This screen will provide you information about car and battery, it supports GPS navigation and Bluetooth connectivity. Other features include a rear-view camera, that will serve as a parking assistant, and cruise control.
Kia Soul Electric Vehicle Price
What is interesting is that this is the first all-electric Kia model to be marketed in the United States. The 2015 Kia Soul EV went on sale in the summer of 2014. First, it was available in Oregon and California, followed by launch in Maryland, New Jersey and New York. The base model is priced at $33,700, while the Plus model costs additional two thousand dollars. Just to note, these prices does NOT include $7,500 taxes.
