The 2014 Toyota Highlander is perhaps one of the most wanted and the most popular SUVs on the market. It was unveiled at the 2013 New York Auto Show and it is already available for sale.

Exterior Design

2014 Toyota Highlander

The new 2014 Toyota Highlander SUV has a strong stance and it looks much more luxurious than the Toyota 4Runner. It has a redesigned front end with larger trapezoidal grille, which looks more aggressive. The headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights contribute to the aggressive style.

Viewed from the side, you will notice that the top is slightly lower and come with integrated roof rails. This was done for a reason to improve overall aerodynamics. The SUV rides on either 18-inch or optional 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels.

On the back, we have a large tailgate, which, together with a sharp taillights and prominent bumper contributes to a strong stance of the Toyota Highlander.

Interior Styling

Cabin of the 2014 Toyota Highlander is very spacious. There are three rows of seats, so there is enough room for up to eight passengers. The seats are very comfortable, and passengers will be able to enjoy a comfortable ride while listening to music. This is a perfect vehicle for road trips.

What makes car’s interior luxurious are leather seats, multifunction steering wheel wrapped in leather, wooden and chrome accents on the dashboard, wooden inserts on the doors, and all that technology. Also, there are plenty compartments and sections where you can dispose all your stuff, and almost in every corner there are cup holders.

Of course, there’s plenty of room in the back for all your luggage, and if that is not enough, and not all eight passengers are traveling, the rear seats can be folded for increased storage space.

When I mentioned technology, I was thinking of Entune multimedia system with installed Entune App Suite. This software will let you control many aspects of the car via either a 6.1-inch or 8.0-inch touchscreen display. You can use GPS navigation, listen to music through 12 JBL speakers, depending on the model you can activate SiriusXM and HD radio, search the web using Bing for traffic and weather info, connect your smartphone via Bluetooth connection and access your contacts and messages, or stream your MP3 music. Optionally, you can add Blu-Ray DVD system. The display is also connected to the rearview camera, allowing you to park your vehicle easier and safer.

Engine and Performance

Depending on what kind of performance you prefer, as well as depending on the price, customers can buy the new 2014 Toyota Highlander with one of three engine options. A hybrid engine will be offered and two petrol engines.

First, there is a standard 2.7-liter inline-4 VVT-i petrol engine that transfer its power to front wheels via a 6-speed automatic gearbox. It can produce 185 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. It is EPA rated at 20/25/22 mpg city/highway/combined.

The second option includes a 3.5-liter 6-cylinder gasoline engine with dual VVT-i mated to a six-speed ECT transmission. You will have an option to choose among front-wheel and 4WD systems. This engine produces 270 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. The 2WD model is EPA rated at 19/25/21 mpg, while the 4WD is rated at 18/24/20 mpg city/highway/combined.

Lastly, hybrid models are powered by the same 3.5-liter V-6 engine which is paired with an electric motor-generator. These can develop a total of 280 horsepower and 215 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to an electronically controlled CVT transmission. The engine provides power to the front wheels, while the electric motor transfers its power to the rear wheels, which means that this is an all-wheel drive model. It is EPA rated at 27 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg combined.
